Strong earthquakes strike the Pacific coast of Russia, triggering a tsunami warning.

Near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Russia’s Kamchatka region, three earthquakes were detected, including one with a magnitude of 7.4.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that three earthquakes, including one with a magnitude of 7.4, were detected off the Pacific coast of Russia, prompting the issuance of a tsunami warning.

Approximately 140 kilometres (87 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Russia’s Kamchatka province, which is home to more than 160,000 people, was the epicentre of a series of earthquakes on Sunday, the others measuring 6.7 and 5.0.

The USGS reports that the earthquakes occurred within 32 minutes off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the same location. The depth of the magnitude 7.4 earthquake was 20 kilometres (12 miles).

Casualty reports were not immediately available. Parts of Russia are at risk of tsunamis, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Centre. Later, the state of Hawaii’s separate tsunami watch was cancelled.

confirmed that on Sunday, at least one earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was detected off the east coast of the Kamchatka peninsula. It was then revised to magnitude 7.4 by GFZ.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is situated in the Kamchatka region, which faces the Pacific. It is situated across the Bering Sea, northeast of Japan, and west of the US state of Alaska. The Kamchatka Peninsula is a seismic hot zone because it is where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates converge. The region has had seven significant earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 or greater since 1900.
