NEW ORLEANS — In the end, it didn’t really matter that Dustin Poirier lost his final bout of his illustrious UFC career on Saturday.
Even though Poirier lost to former featherweight champion Max Holloway via unanimous decision at UFC 318 inside the Smoothie King Center, it was nonetheless a fitting conclusion to his 16-year professional career.
The five-round BMF title bout saw multiple dramatic momentum shifts before the two met in the midst of Holloway’s trademark point-down exchange. Holloway won the lightweight bout with scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 from all three judges.
Holloway (27-8) greeted all BMF challengers immediately following the victory and mentioned 155-pound champion Ilia Topuria briefly before handing the focus over to Poirier (30-10).
